Billiards Notation 2

Well, there are a couple of problems.

  1. There is no need for a Y particular. Simply redundant.
  2. I think that the dash should be a start and end marker. That way, multiple particulars can be included. And it clears up the key pairings of start and end locations
  3. I thought about “showing the path of the cue ball, other than kicks and banks”… That would be the path for position on the next shot. Well, I don’t see a lot of value in that for this notation. Comments?

The Plan

Each ‘location’ is identified by LetterNumber pair. There are 5 basic parts to a shot. In order:

Starting cueball location
Starting objectball location
A letter to describe particulars of the shot
Ending cueball location
Ending objectball location

The ‘particulars of a shot’ is given by one or more of the following:

  • - for delimiting particulars
    • Used for complex shots, like combinations, caroms or billiards.
    • Any digit(s) following the dash will be the ball number that was ultimately the end of the complex shot
    • Optionally place just one dash to visiually separate the starting and ending locaitons. Personally, I prefer this.
  • P for ‘push’
  • M for ‘missed the pocket’
  • F for ‘fouled’
  • K for a kick, followed by the location of the contact point of the kick. Optional.
  • B for bank, followed by the location of the contact point of the bank. Optional.

Billiards notation

Well, I started developing this notation back in Dec 2010 and posted it to the old website. Now I’m posting it here. :) I don’t think that this is complete. Certainly the example listed below is not as detailed as it could be. But this is a start at defining a notation that can be used for all cue sports. I plan to open comments and I hope to hear your ideas for improving the notation.

The idea was to have some way to write down a description of a billiards shot. The images (the same, just one horizontal and one vertical) give the locations of the letters and numbers.

NOTE 1: The letters “O”, as in Orange and “Q” as in Quebec are absent to avoid confusion with the digit zero.

NOTE 2: There is no attempt to completely describe the table layout. It is assumed that a photograph or other image will show layouts at particular times.  That image should be shown at the correct ‘time’ in the list of shots.

The Plan

Each ‘location’ is identified by LetterNumber pair. There are 5 basic parts to a shot. In order:

Starting cueball location
Starting objectball location
A letter to describe particulars of the shot
Ending Objectball location
Ending cueball location

The ‘particulars of a shot’ is given by one or more of the following:

  • P for ‘push’
  • Y for ‘yes the object ball was pocketed’
  • M for ‘missed the pocket’
  • F for ‘fouled’
  • - for complex shots, like combinations, caroms or billiards. The digit(s) following the dash will be the ball number that was ultimately the end of the complex shot
  • K for a kick, followed by the location of the contact point of the kick. Optional.
  • B for bank, followed by the location of the contact point of the bank. Optional.
